Zimmerman and Pérez receive Superior Civilian Service Awards

Dr. Eric B. Zimmerman and Juan A. Pérez, recently received a Superior Civilian Service Award during a ceremony at TEC.

Zimmerman, chief of TEC’s Topography, Imagery, and Geospatial Research Division was cited, "for his contributions as a leader and advocate in geospatial engineering research, development, and applications that will have a lasting effect on the Army and the scientific community."

Zimmerman joined TEC in January 2003, after serving more than 26 years on active duty with the Corps of Engineers. His last assignment in the military was as the director of the Mechanical Engineering Research Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Zimmerman served more than 10 years on the faculty at West Point. In addition to teaching and research, he was a technical consultant to the U.S. Army Armaments Research, Development, and Engineering Center, Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., in support of multiple weapons programs.

Zimmerman earned his bachelor’s from West Point in 1976; a master’s in mechanical engineering from the Louisiana State University in 1985; a master’s in national security and strategic planning from the U.S. Naval War College in 1989; and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1995. He is a licensed professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Zimmerman has 19 technical articles published in internationally recognized journals and conferences. His awards include Honor Graduate of the U.S. Army Engineer Officer Advance Course, 1980; twice awarded the Excellence in Scholarship Award by the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter at West Point in 1988 and 1998; Engineer Regiment de Fleury Medal recipient, 1992; Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, 1995; named the Outstanding Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. graduate (from a program with more than 200 doctoral candidates) at commencement exercises at Georgia Tech, 1995; member of the U.S. Military Academy’s Board of Trustees, 1996-1997; elected to the rank of Fellow in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), 2000; promoted to the rank of Full Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy, 2001; named the Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the St. Lawrence Section of the American Society for Engineering Education, 2002; and awarded the TEC and ERDC Director’s Award for Excellence in Operational Support in 2005.

Pérez, chief of TEC’s Topography, Imagery and Geospatial Systems Division was cited, "for superior service while serving in a series of positions of increasing responsibility from 2002 through 2006." Pérez is responsible for the division’s development, fielding and sustainment of Army and Joint C4ISR capabilities including the Digital Topographic Support System, the Tactical Exploitation System and the Joint Advanced Deep Operations Coordination System. In addition, Pérez oversees technology integration and demonstration projects for a variety of DOD customers. Before serving in this capacity, Pérez served as director for Modeling and Simulation for the Joint Precision Strike Demonstration Project Office (JPSD). At the JPSD Project Office, he assisted the director in the execution of Joint Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrations (ACTDs) andrelated technology integration and evaluation projects to support Combatant Commands’ requirements. Pérez was previously on assignwith the Defense Modeling and Simulation Office serving as program manager for the IntegrateNatural Environment Program. Before that, he served as a branch chief and principal investigator for research and development projects at TEC. Hearned a bachelor’s in civil engineering from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, and a master’s in remote sensing and photogrammetry from The Ohio State University. Pérez is a registered land surveyor in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
