ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Immokalee resident Sgt. Sylvia F. Tumball re-enlisted for three more years in the Army in a ceremony conducted at the U.S. Army Topographic Engineer Center (TEC) recently. TEC is a research and development laboratory of the Army Corps of Engineers’ Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC).
Chief Warrant Officer 4 (P) Michael Harper, TEC’s military deputy, presided over the ceremony.
Tumball serves as a topographic analyst with TEC’s Military Support Team. The team is responsible for supporting the warfighter by testing and updating hardware and software for military units that enable warfighters, commanders and senior leaders to successfully execute their missions faster and more effectively.
She recently completed the Warriors Leaders Course, a month-long, in-house military management school that teaches skills necessary to lead small groups of Soldiers.
Since joining the Army four years ago, Tumball has completed two tours in Iraq. She has also been assigned to the 555th Engineer Co. (III Corps) from June 2003 to November 2005 and the 4th Infantry Division in Fort Hood, Texas, from December 2005 to March 2007. Her next assignment will in San Antonio, Texas.
During the ceremony Harper said, "For a young Soldier to re-enlist today, with everything that is going on in the world, with all the uncertainties and the fact that the military is deployed and engaged in combat in multiple locations is a huge commitment. You have my utmost respect Sgt. Tumball."
TEC provides the warfighter with a superior knowledge of the operational environmental and supports the nation’s civil and environmental initiatives through research, development, and the application of expertise in the topographic and related sciences. The ERDC is the premier research and development facility for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, consisting of seven laboratories at four geographical sites with more than 2,000 employees and an annual research program exceeding $1 billion. It conducts research in both military and civil works mission areas for the Department of Defense and the nation.
