ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Dr. Michael Izady and Dr. Bradford McGuinn, guest lecturers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Dynamics of International Terrorism Global Issues Program I Seminars, will conduct the advanced seminar "Islam and Insurgency," Oct. 30 to Nov. 2, at 8 a.m., at the Humphrey’s Engineer Center (Kingman Building in the McKenzie Hearing Room), Telegraph and Leaf Roads, Alexandria, Va. The event is hosted by the Engineer Research and Development Centers’ Topographic Engineering Center (ERDC-TEC) in Alexandria.
The aim of the seminar is to familiarize Corps personnel and other participants, with Islam, one of the most formidable political and sociological forces in today’s world. The seminar commences with a close examination of the Islamic religion and its political and social doctrine. The seminar also examines the notion that Islam, as a religion, is the source of current worldwide violence. The lecturers present an in-depth analysis of the American security concerns vis-à-vis the insurgent revolutionary Islam.
Since 1997, Drs. Izady and McGuinn have presented training seminars and briefings on various areas of American military operations to members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, Reservists, the Corps and other civil-military units in the United States and overseas. They also serve as master professors to the Joint Special Operations University at Hurlburt Field Air Force Base, Fla.
The ERDC is the premier research and development facility for the Corps with more than 2,000 employees, $1.2 billion in facilities, and an annual research program exceeding $1 billion. It conducts research in both military and civil works mission areas for the Department of Defense and the nation. ERDC-TEC’s mission is to provide the warfighter with a superior knowledge of the battlefield and to support the nation’s civil and environmental initiatives. This mission is accomplished through research, development, and the application of expertise in the topographic and related sciences.
