Description and Background
The US Army Geospatial Center (AGC) started producing Garmin format data in 2006 as a secondary navigational aid in response to user requests for custom map data compatible with Garmin GPS receivers. Garmin maps are produced using Garmin's own Mapsource Product Creator (MPC) software which insures maximum compatibility with most Garmin GPS handheld devices. Overseas conflicts routinely occur in areas void of commercially available GPS maps. AGC fills this void as the sole provider of Garmin format map data specifically tailored for military personnel over these deployed regions.
Key Capabilities
AGC provides Global Positioning System (GPS) map data for use with the Garmin GPSMAP® 60/62/64, Oregon®, Montana®, MonterraTM, eTrex® and other Garmin devices. Garmin GPS devices are one of the most widespread commercial GPS devices used by military personnel. The devices are frequently purchased by military units and individuals and are meant to serve as a secondary navigational aid to the military Defense Advanced GPS Receiver (DAGR) and Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver (PLGR) GPS devices. The Garmin map products produced by AGC support the Army’s unique mission areas, as many areas where the US Army operates do not have detailed GPS data.
Product Development
AGC uses many sources to create a suitable map product to support the Garmin map format. These sources include NGA data as well as various open source information.
Current Status
AGC has completed Garmin format maps for countries outside the continental US (OCONUS) that lack commercial availability from Garmin. AGC's Garmin Maps are available on AGC websites for download, via CD or can they be obtained on a preloaded MicroSD card by request. Customized GPS maps can be produced based on customer requirements and data availability. Requests for Garmin format map production should be submitted to the HQDA G-2 for approval. Garmin data can be accessed on the AGC PKI site at https://cac.agc.army.mil/Products/GarminMapSupport/index.cfm
Requests for MicroSD cards or CDs of Garmin data can be sent to DLL-AGC-CMB@usace.army.mil or via an online order form at http://www.agc.army.mil/Home/CMBRequestForm.aspx
