Water Resource Assessments and Appraisals (WRA/WAA)

Published Feb. 14, 2013

Description and Background

Since 1995 the Army Geospatial Center’s Hydrologic Analysis Team has produced Water Resources Assessments (WRA) in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District's Water Resources Assessment Program, which in turn directly supports the U.S. Southern Command's (SOUTHCOM) Humanitarian Civic Assistance water development program. The WRA summarize water resources information for a selected country in Central or South America. Each assessment includes two topics - Surface Water Resources and Ground Water Resources - with text, tables, and figures. These studies are unclassified, and are shared with the host countries. Requirements for similar studies have also been completed for CENTCOM, PACOM, and EUCOM countries and regions. These studies are produced as Water Areal Appraisals (WAA).

Key Capabilities

The WRA & WAA studies provide the military planner with critical water resource data to make informed decisions. AGC’s staff of water resource experts provide expert analysis over dynamic and often poorly documented countries and regions of the world.  The resulting studies enable military decision makers to focus resources as required to meet mission objectives.

Product Development

Producer - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Army Geospatial Center, Warfighter Geospatial Support & Production Directorate. The WRA & WAA studies can be tailored to address a customer’s area of concern.  This data is available in shapefile and KML/KMZ formats. The newest versions of the studies are added to AGC’s Water Resource Data Base (WRDB) that are built with Arc Geodatabases utilizing NGA Feature Attribute Coding Catalogue structure for portability.

Current Status

Complete WRA/WAA are available in soft copy (Adobe Acrobat GeoPDF) on AGC’s Sipr (http://www.agc.army.smil.mil) and JWICS (http://www.agc.ic.gov) web sites under “Products Available/Water Resources.” Unclassified/FOUO versions are available on the AGC NIPRNET PKI site.
