Douglas R. Caldwell, ERDC-TEC, recently received the Department of the Army’s Superior Civilian Service Award. Caldwell was cited for professionalism, technical excellence and leadership in geospatial information technology, related to the Joint- Geospatial Enterprise Services (J-GES) program and the Army’s Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program.
J-GES is a research and development (R&D) program focusing on the application of geospatial information to the Army’s decision-making process in a net centric environment. J-GES works closely with industry and university partners to demonstrate new technologies, quantify the value of geospatial information, and accelerate the transition of geospatial technology to Soldiers in the field.
SBIR is a highly competitive program that encourages small business to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization. By including qualified small businesses in the nation’s R&D arena, high-tech innovation is stimulated and the United States gains entrepreneurial spirit as it meets its specific research and development needs.
Caldwell is a physical scientist in TEC’s Information Generation and Management Branch. He specializes in research related to cartographic visualization and geospatial analysis. The branch conducts research on techniques, equipment, and systems for creating and maintaining military geospatial data. Prior to joining TEC, Caldwell served as a cartographer at the Defense Mapping Agency (now the National Geospatial- Intelligence Agency).
Caldwell, a native of Northampton, Mass., earned a bachelor’s in geography from Dartmouth College, a master’s in cartography from the University of Wisconsin, and a master’s in geographical information systems from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
